Surviving Long Haul Flights!

29 Mar, 2023

Long haul flights can be an exciting adventure, and with a bit of preparation and a positive attitude, you can have a fantastic experience!

First off, don't forget to pack your essentials for maximum comfort. Bring a neck pillow, earplugs, headphones, and an eye mask to help you get some well-deserved rest. One of my favorite gifts I was given for Christmas is a compact, foldable blanket. It is small enough to fit in your carryon and can be used as a blanket or pillow! This has come in handy on multiple occasions! I will never fly without it!   When booking your seat, choose wisely! Get a window seat to gaze at the stunning views or opt for the front of the plane or an exit row for extra legroom. I personally only ever book a window seat right on the wing. Sitting on the wing is great for people who experience motion sickness. It is the section of the plane that feels the less bumps during that unexpected rough air.

Staying hydrated is vital for an enjoyable flight, so make sure to drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and caffeine. This is a hard one! I love both coffee and a good in-flight mimosa! I wouldn’t say completely avoid it, but just make sure you get your water intake in! I also put an empty reusable water bottle in my carryon so I can fill it up after I get through TSA. I am also notorious for spilling, so this just works better for me instead of trying to carefully balance my tiny water cup on board or asking the flight attendants for multiple cups of water!

Don't forget to move around every few hours and stretch your legs to avoid discomfort and improve circulation. I am not a very tall girl; my last doctor's visit I measured in at a whopping 5 feet 3 inches! I may be on the shorter side, but I still like getting up stretching my legs. I used to hate being that person who got up to use the restroom or just stretch. But during these long-haul flights, it is almost a necessity! So don’t feel bad! Stretch your legs, girl!

Also take advantage of in-flight entertainment. There have been a few times where a new block buster movie that I haven’t seen is available during my flight! Between you and me, I’ve watched a couple movies that I said I would wait and watch with my husband! What happens on the plane stays on the plane! If my husband is traveling with me, we always bring a book and a deck of cards! Definitely makes the time fly by!

Okay, this is probably the most important piece of knowledge.... Pack some yummy snacks! Nuts, fruit, and protein bars are great options to have on hand! I normally back those and then some of my favorite candy. One time I packed some gummy bears. I opened the bag up and a gentleman 3 rows up took his headphones off, stood up and goes “did someone open up some gummy bears?” Probably the funniest way I made a friend!

Finally, keep a positive attitude! A long-haul flight is a small part of your journey, so focus on the exciting adventures ahead of you! You are in for a great time!

Buckle up! It's time for your next adventure!
