π Saying "I Do" in Paradise: Destination Weddings in Mexico & the Caribbean
Why settle for a ballroom when you could get married barefoot in the sand, surrounded by turquoise waves and swaying palm trees? Destination weddings in Mexico and the Caribbean have become the go-to for those wanting something a little out of the ordinary and a vacation for not only themselves, but also their guests.
Fun fact: I was a wedding planner for over a decade prior to getting into the travel industry and planned hundreds of events each year. Weddings are still a huge passion of mine and I love helping brides navigate the ins and outs of destination planning.
Here’s why these sun-soaked spots are the ultimate “something blue.”
π΄ Should I Choose a Destination Wedding?
- Built-in vacation vibes for you and your guests.
- Intimate guest lists—Not everyone is going to be willing to take time off to join you and costs may play a factor, so those that can make it want to celebrate with you!
- One-stop planning with all-inclusive resorts that can take care of everything from flowers to fire dancers.
- Postcard-perfect backdrops that require zero decorating. Nature’s your venue designer now.
Mexico: The Chip to Your Guac
πTop Spots:
- Riviera Maya: Think jungle-meets-beach luxury with cenote photo ops, easy to navigate airports and plenty of resorts to choose from.
- Cabo San Lucas: Sunsets, cliffs, and chic resorts. Desert vibes and fun excursions
- Puerto Vallarta: Colorful colonial charm meets coastal bliss and some killer sunsets.
π‘Pro Tips:
- Legal vs. Symbolic Ceremonies: Mexico and the Caribbean have a few hoops to jump through for legal weddings. The majority of my client's opt for a quick courthouse marriage at home, then have a symbolic ceremony on the beach or their chosen location. Way less paperwork!!
- Best Time to Go: Late November to mid-April (dry season + best selection of flights).
ποΈ Caribbean Dreams
πTop Spots:
- Jamaica: No problem, 'Mon vibes, stunning beaches and some of the friendliest wedding planners ever.
- Dominican Republic: Powdery sand, beautiful beaches and options for both on property and off-resort locations.
- St. Lucia: Dramatic Piton peaks and some seriously romantic resorts.
π‘Pro Tips:
- All-Inclusive Perks: Many resorts offer free or discounted wedding packages if you book a certain number of nights or rooms.
- Island Time Is Real: Pack your patience and embrace the slower pace. Things will get done… eventually.
𧳠Packing & Planning Essentials
- Start planning at least a year out—especially for high season. The sooner you lock in, the better chance you get your desired location.
- Book with a Travel Agent Let them handle all the guests and help you find a location with a wedding package to ease the stress.
- Save-the-Dates - Give your guests a good heads up on your plans so they can plan and save accordingly to celebrate with you!
- Pack your wedding dress as a carry-on, not in checked luggage (unless you want a bridezilla sighting at baggage claim).
- Bring legal documents (passport, birth certificate, etc.) if planning a legal wedding abroad. Make sure to double check in destination requirements ahead of time.
