TSA PreCheck vs. Clear vs. Global Entry: Which is Right for You?
Whether you're a frequent flyer, or just occasionally take that big family vacation, you've likely found yourself stuck in long security or customs line praying you will make that next connection.
Fortunately, there is. Programs like TSA PreCheck, CLEAR Plus, and Global Entry can save you time and stress at the airport. But which one should you choose?
Let’s break down what each program offers, how much they cost, and how to determine which is the best fit for your travel habits.
TSA PreCheck: The Domestic Traveler
What it is:
TSA PreCheck is a program offered by the Transportation Security Administration that allows low-risk travelers to use expedited security lines at over 200 U.S. airports.
Key benefits:
Access to dedicated security lanes at over 290+ airports in the U.S.
No need to remove shoes, laptops, belts, light jackets, or liquids. Everything stays in your bag.
Security line wait times of typically less than 5-10 minutes
Cost:
$76.75 for 5 years (as of 2025), with many credit cards reimbursing the fee
Best for:
Travelers who fly frequently within the U.S. and want to speed through airport security.
Children 17 and under can join an adult with TSA PreCheck if TSA PreCheck appears on the child’s boarding pass as well (needs to be on the same itinerary as the adult they are traveling with.)
Processing Time:
Approximately 3-5 business days (90% approved rate) Once approved, you will have a 10 minute, in-person appointment at an enrollment center to complete fingerprinting, document and photo capture. This only needs to be completed once. After that, renewals are done online.
CLEAR Plus: Digital Identity FastTrack
What it is:
CLEAR Plus (formerly CLEAR) is a privately-run program that uses biometric data (face, fingerprint or iris scan) to verify your identity and help you skip the initial ID check at security.
Key benefits:
Access to Clear lanes for faster identity verification
Can be used along with TSA PreCheck for even faster security clearance
Available at 59 U.S. airports and growing. It is also being used as a means of entry for entertainment venues, stadiums and arenas across the U.S.
Cost:
$199/year (discounts are often available through airline loyalty programs or credit cards)
Best for:
Frequent flyers who want the fastest possible way through airport security—especially at busy hubs
Family members under 18 can join you in the CLEAR lane.
Global Entry: The International Advantage
What it is:
Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that provides expedited clearance for pre-approved travelers entering the U.S. from international destinations.
Note: you will still need to go through immigration and customs protocols in countries you are visiting.
Key benefits:
Skip long immigration lines at more than 75 U.S. international airports
Includes TSA PreCheck membership. Well worth the extra cost if you plan to travel outside of the U.S. at any point.
Use automated kiosks and dedicated lanes for processing
Cost:
$120 for 5 years
Note: Requires an in-person interview, fingerprinting and a more thorough background check
Best for:
International travelers who want to breeze through customs when returning to the U.S.
Processing Time:
This is a two-step application process. Times will vary based on interview availability once you receive your conditional approval. My husband’s recent application was approved in two weeks and he was able to get an interview right away. My renewal was processed in three business days.
Which One Is Right For You?
Mostly traveling domestically? TSA PreCheck is a great, affordable choice.
Want the absolute fastest security process in U.S. Airports and typically travel through larger airports? Combine ClearPlus + TSA PreCheck.
Travel internationally at least 2+ times a year? Global Entry is worth the upgrade and includes TSA PreCheck in the fee.
If budget allows, many frequent travelers find that Clear + TSA PreCheck + Global Entry is the ultimate combo for smooth airport experiences both in the U.S. and abroad.
